Visitor Guide

Education
April – October, part time, hourly. 3 days a week minimum. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Description:

Visitor guides welcome 120,000 visitors annually, providing interpretation of the Museum’s permanent collections and changing exhibitions. Daily interaction with the public includes active discussion, lecture, and/or demonstration in assigned buildings and/or exhibits. Guides participate in extensive pre and in-season training and conduct independent research as needed (on-site reading, Museum library use, lectures, etc.).

Qualifications:

At least two years working with the public required. Previous teaching or training experience very desirable. Previous work with an historical society, museum, or related organization helpful. Equivalent of two or more years of college preferred. Ability to stand 5-7 hours per day and walk 1-3 hours; ability to lift/carry 15+ lbs. Ability to work in multi-level sites and climb stairs, and ability to travel across museum grounds in order to carry out security and interpretive responsibilities.

Compensation and Benefits:

Shuttle Driver

April – October, part time, hourly. 3 days a week minimum. Weekend hours are required.

Description:

Drivers care for and drive Museum shuttle buses, transporting visitors on the grounds during daily business hours. Position may include evening hours during rental/special events. Driver will assist elderly or disabled individuals enter and exit our vehicles and provide orientation to the museum in a professional and friendly manner. We seek individuals who enjoy working with the public and who are able to assimilate and communicate a great deal of information about exhibits, special activities, and events. We seek drivers completely committed to safety and comfortable driving in all kinds of weather.

Qualifications:

At least two years working with the public required. Excellent customer service skills. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required. Commercial Drivers License (CDL) highly desirable. Previous work experience at a museum or related organization helpful. Equivalent of two or more years of college preferred. Ability to sit 5-7 hours per day and walk 1-2 hours and lift/carry 30+ lbs. Drivers must have the ability to manipulate and set up the ramp on the wheelchair lift of the vehicle.

Reserve Protection Services Security Officer

Description:

Protection Services Officers are responsible for providing a secure environment within the Museum’s art galleries. Officers help insure the art collection remains safe, but accessible to visitors. Monitor activity and provide professional assistance to Museum guests as needed.

Qualifications:

Qualified applicants must have a High School diploma or equivalen. Must have security or customer service experience. Ability to communicate using two-way radios is required. Knowledge of alarm systems helpful. First responder medical training a plus. Applicants must exhibit professional dress and grooming. Applicants must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time, interact well with Museum staff, guests and visitors and work some weekend shifts.

Collections Management Fellowships

2-year position, full time, year round

Description:

Two positions are available beginning June 1, 2010. Collections management fellows will assist in object handling, preparation and maintenance, labeling/marking, as well as deal with incoming and outgoing loans. Fellows will spend a bulk of their time developing the collections database as well as other related cataloguing and documentation duties. The applicant will work well with many types of people and work efficiently on independent projects.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have an art history degree or relevant course work and be proficient in technological aids. B.A. or B.S. is required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Annual stipend of $16,000 plus housing, paid leave, and eligibility to participate in the Museum’s 401(k) plan after 1 year (does not include medical benefits). There will be 6- and 12-month performance reviews.

Summer Education Internships

June 1 – August 13, 2010

Description:

Five positions available, beginning June 1. Education interns will have the opportunity to work in one or more of several education programmatic areas, including summer camps, family programs and activities, special events, and exhibition guiding. Interns may work as camp counselors, assist with the planning and execution of special day and evening events, and work in the family activity center. Interns may also conduct research, fill in as exhibition guides, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Art and/or art history background preferred. Experience working with children and CPR/First Aid certification are a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

Stipend of $2,000 plus housing.

Call for Volunteers

Description:

Shelburne Museum is a wonderful place to volunteer your time. If you have a few hours a week and would like to help support an important educational institution in your community, we encourage you to consider volunteering with us.

We’re currently seeking volunteers interested in gardening, carpentry, helping out with family programs and special events, and assisting with administrative and office tasks.

Volunteers are integral to Shelburne Museum, and we offer great benefits, including free admission to the Museum with your Volunteer Badge, an annual recognition event, and more.
